First Birthday Celebration!

Who doesn't love to celebrate birthdays? I LOVE them! My birthday is my favourite day of the year (well we'll see about this year, turning 30!) Anyways, a friend asked me to make something special for her daughter to wear for her first birthday and of course I said yes!
Her daughter loves Minnie Mouse so of course the outfit had to be Minnie Mouse themed!
First thing was to pick up some tulle at the fabric store. I had thought about buying the spools at Michaels but those were $10 each! And I spent less than $5 on the two different colours at the fabric store, great saving!

First, I laid the tulle on the table and cut it into strips (about 6 inches wide)

Afterwards, I cut the strips in half, they were about 17 inches.

All the strips are cut and ready to roll, it seemed like I had a ton so I used two each time I knotted them around the elastic.

I put the elastic around a piece of cardboard to keep the tulle even. I made my way around tying on pieces until I reached the other side.

I cut the pattern out on my cricut (my goodness I love the cricut craft room)! Then I ironed the freezer paper onto the onesie and painted!

I hung the onesie to dry for 24 hours, it usually dries quickly but I really did not want to smudge anything.
The outfit is all finished and ready for her to wear on her first birthday!

I also made her a smash cake for her to rip into as soon as the big day rolls around :)

And check out this adorable card I whipped up to go with her present :) Aw she's going to love her birthday!

Cake Smash

I've made a few cake smash cakes and they are so much fun!

My niece turned one back in July and she was my first cake smash cake.
Very simple vanilla cake with pink icing swirled around.

She loved it - it was everywhere and she went straight to the tub :)

My boyfriend's nephew turned one yesterday and I got to make another smash cake!
His dad is a huge Atlanta Falcons fan so that was the theme of the cake. I made the cake topper on a piece of cardboard so it could be taken off before he dug in.
Simple piece of cardboard covered in tin foil and then I piped the Falcon's logo!

Not too much colouring as he's never had cake before so he didn't need lots of dye.

And he LOVED it!

Golf Cake

I made one cake for the family to see and I became a hit! haha :) My boyfriend's cousin was having a birthday party for her fiance and asked if I could bring along the cake. The boys started the day off by going golfing so a golf cake was only fitting :)
I found out that he was not a huge fan of cake but enjoyed carrot cake so that's what I made. A 9x13in carrot cake with cream cheese frosting (yummm deliciousness) and believe me once it was made I licked the beaters :)
I died the icings green for the grass and a small bit of blue for some water on the course. I also made some sand traps with graham cracker crumbs. It turned out looking just like a golf course!

I rarely get to see the customer when they view the cake for the first time - so this part was fun! He was very happy and said it tasted delicious as well :)

New York Rangers Cake

My boyfriend's cousin was getting married and the day before their wedding was the groom's birthday. Well of course, he needed some celebrations and a cake needed to be included. He loves the New York Rangers so his fiance asked me if I could make a cake with the Rangers theme.
This one was super fun to make!
I started by baking a 9x13in cake and letting it cool over night. Afterwards I cut the neck from the top and set to work doing a crumb coating before adding the fondant! I cut all the pieces out of fondant minus the words on the jersey. I had tried but the letter cookie cutters were too large to fit, so I decided to pipe the words.
The groom was blown away by the results, he cut the cake around the logo and didn't want anyone else to have a piece of that part!
So happy to have happy customers :)

Michael Kors Cake

Another request for a cake that looks like a purse! I got to be creative and choose the colours that I wanted so I chose sky blue because it is cute and it works well into the fondant. I find black and brown take forever to kneed in and it doesn't always look the greatest - there are sometimes streaks!

They were undecided on the flavor of cake so I went with marble. I started by baking a chocolate and a vanilla in a bread pan. After they were cooled, I put icing in the middle and stuck them together.

Then I lightly iced the outside of the cake. Keep the icing light because the more icing, the more the fondant will slide around.

I then rolled out the fondant, measured the ends of the cake and cut the fondant to fit with a pizza cutter. I find putting the sides on first and then adding an edge later is much easier than trying to smooth the entire cake in fondant.

After putting the rolled fondant on, I rolled out some edges and a handle. I also made an MK for Michael Kors, free hand, with a knife.

To finish it off I added some small rolled balls of fondant as a chain and painted those and the MK in gold. Myself and the customer was pleased with the results :)

Birthday Cakes

I am sure many people can recall what kind of cake they had at most of their birthdays. I sure can :) I remember each year my mom would make the same home made cake with homemade icing for my birthday. And one year I had entered a ballot for a contest and won a Boston Cream cake - it was so darn delicious. I can still taste it!

I really love making cakes so here are a few birthday cakes I have made over the years :)

Cookie Monster cake for my cousin's 1st birthday

Dora Cake for my cousin's birthday

Dump Truck cake with crushed ore's as dirt

Ford Themed birthday cake for a Ford lover

 Mindcraft Pig for a friend's son's birthday

 Spideman cake with cupcakes

Sunflower cupcakes for a special friend's birthday

Tea Party themed birthday cake with a teapot and cups to play with later :)

Louis Vitton

A friend asked me to make her daughter's birthday cake this year with a Louis Vitton theme. I was a little nervous as I'm no professional but I googled some images and there were some very awesome ones! I found one I thought I may be able to replicate and set out on the task :)

First I made a batch of chocolate marshmallow fondant. I really like this Wilton recipe so I decided to add 2 tablespoons of cocoa to make it chocolate. You can find the link to the fondant here: Marshmallow Fondant .
Then I baked 2 loaf pan sized marble cakes. I let them cool for a couple hours and did a crumb coat of chocolate icing to hold the fondant in place.

Then I was ready to roll out the fondant :)

After rolling the fondant, I dyed some of the left over fondant with brown colouring to make the details of the purse.

I had to hand paint on the prints for the purse (this took a long time!) I used gold edible dust (glitter) mixed with glycerin - the glycerin asks as a glue and eventually dries and the gold dust is left behind.

The purse is all painted and ready to put in the cake holder until delivery :)

I had to add "Happy Birthday" somewhere so I made a tag that looks like a price tag (not edible).
I sure hope the recipient enjoys the cake as much as I enjoyed making it!
